Yogi and the Doggie

Taking a break from product I shot Jess and Belle (Belle’s the dog – a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier to be exact) overlooking the Intracoastal.

Location portraiture is (still) a specialty of mine.

What I particularly like about this shot is the depth the background lighting provides. We are facing west in late afternoon. We’re in the shade, so my key is raking light from camera right. This provides direction to the light on the subjects, which in turn provides lighting patterns on the face and gives form to her body. For this shot I chose to take the ambient down only 1/2 stop or so as I wanted the distant shore (lit by the sun) to help provide separation. Getting low isolates the subject against the sky – there’s no competition for attention in the image.

Well, except for Belle.
