Shoe Shots

Anytime a new purchase is made, I try to grab it as a subject for a shoot before it’s used. Nothing is safe. I confess I missed on my running shoes (a mistake not to be repeated) but I insisted on grabbing these.

The first is more of a “drop and pop” catalog style shot, although was shot on grey seamless and stylized a bit in post production:

Simple, yet appealing I think. I like the play of the background color against the brown tones of the shoes, which I played up even more by really warming (and softening) the shot in post production.

The second is not nearly so simple, being a 5 light shot and incorporating the packaging (and least the box top). Suede shoes like these are very hard to photograph – they show every imperfection and are light sinks, so I find that I really have to over-light them to show detail.

This last shot has given me other ideas – beware the next shoe shot!
